A new DNV white paper warns that the global fleet of LNG bunker vessels may need to more than double by 2030 to keep pace with rising demand from LNG-fuelled ships, with an estimated 165 to 208 bunker vessels required by the end of the decade.
According to the white paper, reported on 9 September 2026, demand for LNG bunkering is increasing faster than the infrastructure being developed to supply it. The paper sets out a range of required fleet sizes reflecting different demand scenarios, arriving at the 165–208 vessel estimate for 2030.
If the higher end of the estimate materialises, existing bunkering capacity will be stretched and new tonnage will be necessary in multiple regions. The white paper’s figures suggest a significant ramp-up in purpose-built bunker vessels or conversions will be needed within a relatively short timeframe.
Supply lagging demand
DNV’s analysis highlights a timing mismatch: shipowners are adopting LNG as a fuel at a rate that outpaces the pace of bunkering infrastructure expansion. That gap, the paper argues, risks operational bottlenecks for LNG-fuelled ships unless bunkering capacity is scaled up rapidly.
Regions where LNG fuel uptake accelerates first could face the most acute pressure on bunker availability, the report notes. Planning, construction and regulatory clearances for new bunker tonnage can take years, making early decisions by owners, operators and regulators critical.
Fleet implications
Meeting the lower bound of the estimate would still represent a substantial increase in the number of vessels dedicated to LNG bunkering compared with current levels. At the upper bound, the global bunker fleet would more than double, imposing notable demands on investment, classification and shipyard capacity.
