The preliminary S&P Global UK Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index rose to 52.8 in October 2026, signalling a broadening of activity in the sector, sources indicated on 24 October 2026.

The reading was up from 51.9 in September and exceeded market expectations of 51.7, according to the preliminary estimate. The report said the October figure represented the strongest improvement in manufacturing business conditions since May.

Output growth drives the gain

S&P Global’s preliminary data showed the October improvement was supported by the fastest growth in output in just over two years. The headline release noted this surge in production alongside other solid elements in the preliminary estimate.

A Purchasing Managers Index above 50 denotes expansion rather than contraction, so the 52.8 reading points to a continuing, if modest, recovery in UK manufacturing. The monthly increase suggests firms saw firmer demand or were able to increase activity after a period of more subdued performance.

Better than expected and the wider picture

The outcome was not only higher than September’s 51.9 reading but also beat consensus forecasts of 51.7, indicating activity surprised to the upside. That upside helped produce the strongest month-on-month improvement since May, as recorded in the preliminary release.

Manufacturers and observers will watch the finalised S&P Global release for confirmation, but the preliminary figure will be welcomed by business groups seeking evidence of stabilisation. It may also influence short-term assessments of the industrial recovery and inform planning by companies reliant on factory output.

The preliminary S&P Global PMI is a timely barometer of trading conditions in the sector and will now be compared with subsequent official statistics and company reports to build a fuller picture of the fourth-quarter outlook. For now, the October snapshot indicates output-led momentum within the manufacturing base, according to the preliminary estimate published by reports on 24 October 2026.
